Hott or Nott Humpday

So it’s that time of week again =)  If anyone lives in the Philly area or has family/friends around there and is interested in running the Penn Relays Distance Classic 20K on April 18th please let me know!  I signed up for the race before I was able to find a spot in the Cherry Blossom on the 10th and I think running them back to back is too much traveling.  So I have a bib up for grabs.

HOTT

  • Virtual Finish Chelsea’s Run! Please check it out and enter to run!
  • My Raffle (featuring ONE MORE Ipod!) for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Still Time to Enter!  Winner Picked tomorrow! 4/1
  • My Bondi Band Fundraiser: Continuous
  • This song.  I’ve been listening to it all year and love when it pops up on my ipod during a run…
  • Jill Zarin (of Real Housewives) for her silly comment about the “friendship bank”.  Even though she said it in a joking manner its a pretty good metaphor.  If you view your relationships like a mutual bank account, each person should be depositing and withdrawing the same amount.  Of course there are times when one person might need to a take a bit more or one person can give a bit more but in the long run, for a relationship to work, both parties need to give and take and balance each other out.

  • LOST.  Geez their killing me here!  But I love it! I want Jin and Sun to find each other so bad!
  • These special edition Bud Light bottles from St. Patrick’s Day.  In case you couldn’t tell, I adore all things Irish and shamrocks and as much as I truly despise the taste of beer, I actually drank one just for this bottle on the 17th =)
  • My job.  I seriously LOVE it.  Working in a running store=wonderful
  • Cherry Blossom 10 miler is only 2 weekends away!
  • The new Garmin Forerunn 110.  Looks like Garmin is finally starting to think of us girls =) (this model also comes in black and black/red)

NOTT

  • The Nike Women’s Gladitateur Mid Sandal (retails for $79.99).  Sorry but this is just wrong.
  • This article HERE.  To sum it up “A driver who fatally struck a (22 year old) jogger running in the road near Emmitsburg has been fined $500 under a plea agreement.”  So apparently us runners are only worth $500.  Please be careful out there!
  • All the stalking of Elin and Sandra.  Seriously people.  If you found out your husband (and father of your children) was cheating on you, would you really need a camera in your face 24/7.  Leave these ladies alone and let them do what they need to do.
  • This article/study stating that “today’s moms have a lot more free time on their hands than they would like to admit. Free time to the tune of 40 hours a week”.  HAHAHAHA this has got to be a joke.  Can’t wait to hear what all you moms have to say about this one.  I mean I guess if they are considering the time you spend asleep as free time…

I know I’m missing a few things I waned to put on here, guess I’ll throw them in there if I think of it =) What’s on your list this week?

The Truth About Soda

Before I say anything, how about Ricky Martin finally coming out of the closet today?  Enough said, I’ll let you all deal with that one on your own.

This morning I was up early and at the gym for Nike Neal’s “Treading Class”.  This is a directed, treadmill interval workout that you do completely at your own pace (your “up tempo” speed might be 9 min/miles, the person on your left might be “7 min/miles” and the person on your other side might be “10.5 min miles”).  I love that you pick your paces but are encouraged to really push yourself when you can.  I do Neal had hills on today agenda so I prepared myself.  It was a great run, got in 5 miles of the speed/hill work and my knee actually did bug me at all! Don’t want to jinx myself but I’m hoping the new shoes and ITB strap are doing their jobs.  Tomorrow I’m meeting my friend E from TNT for a 6ish miler on the trail so we will see!

While we are running, Neal likes to have a theme for each workout.  Today was hydration.  He did his research and came armed with sheets of nutrition facts about hydration, particularly focusing on water and soda.  Soda lovers, don’t hate me for this.  I learned some very interesting facts about both water and Soda and thought I’d share the wealth (all these facts pertain to both regular AND diet sodas)…

  • 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated
  • Being chronically dehydrated can slower your resting metabolism by 3%!
  • Many people mistake being thirsty for being hungry.  If you have recently eaten a healthy snack or meal and feel the hunger pangs, try drinking a large glass of water and see if that helps.  If you’re still hungry after that than maybe you do need a little something.
  • Soda actually dehydrates you further when you are thirsty
  • If you leave a T-Bone steak submerged in Coke (or similar soda), all the meat will be gone in two days.
  • The citric acid in soda is great for cleaning your toilet.  Pouring a can of soda into the toilet and letting it sit for an hour can remove stubborn stains.
  • To remove rubbed in grease from clothes, add a cake of soda to your next load.  The acid in the soda easily eats away the grease.
  • Highway patrol keep about 5 gallons of Coke in their trunks to help remove blood and oil from accident scenes. (GROSS)
  • Coke is a preferred cleaning agent for removing corrosion from a car battery

So there ya have it.  Drink less soda.  Drink more water.  And even if you don’t drink soda…drink for water anyway cuz 3 out of 4 people are dehydrated…water is good for you, and ups your metabolism =)

And remember to check out the Virtual “Finish Chelsea’s Run” =)

Tall Mom Virtual Race Recap and Shoe Problems

This weekend many of us participated in Tall Mom’s Virtual Race for the Cure!  Of course I signed up and had a blast!  I was aiming for the 10K.  Wasn’t going for a PR or anything like that this weekend…still nursing the knee but I was happy with my time.  Ended up with a time of 57 min 22 secs.  Ended up doing it on the treadmill which wasn’t ideal but hey it was a run.  Therefore I don’t have very much to report.  But thanks Mel for the Opportunity it was alot of fun!

Yesterday I went for a 4 mile run with my dad in the afternoon.  I was hoping to meet up with Erin, but because it was Palm Sunday and church was the priority, we weren’t able to find a time that worked for both of us (but hopefully next Saturday!).  So my dad (who now actually reads this blog from time to time, Hi Dad!)  and I got ready and went to head out the door.  Then I realized we were both wearing the exact same shirt (a long sleeve under armour that was the premium from the Turkey Trot we did in November).  It was pretty funny but Dad ended up changing into a different shirt.  I guess matching your 21 year old daughter isn’t really that cool.  It was pretty nice running weather.  A bit windy and chilly but it was sunny!  Unfortunately we live at the top of a hill so no matter what route we take, you have to start down hill and end up hill.  Boo.  I felt great for the first 2.5 miles or so.  My dad just got a Garmin Forerunner 405 not too long ago and it was pretty funny, both our Garmins would beep off the miles at the same time (which makes me really happy cuz hey that means Gracie and her little foot pod are just as accurate as the GPS models!).  But then he hit the fun up hills and the knee start bugging me something awful.  I finally told my dad I had to try to walk it off a bit which is SOOOO frustrating.  I HATE IT.  My lungs and legs felt good but my knee was not having it.  I ended up walking more than I would have liked (Dad circled a few neighborhoods so we weren’t far from each other) and I finally got frustrated and took off for the last stretch of the run.  We actually ran that last bit at a 7:30 pace!  WHAT!  A 9 min pace is fast for ne.  So we got home, I iced and Ibprofened the knee and it feels fine now but I was frustrated.  Really frustrated.

So I decided to go back to the running store I now work at and see if M, the awesome girl who has been training me had an suggestions.  She told me to bring in my shoes to check my wear pattern and I ran on the treadmill while she videoed my gait.  She showed it to me and wow.  Get this, my left foot is neutral, my right foot is more on the pronation side.  Cool.  My feet want two different shoes.  But wearing a stability shoe on a neutral foot can actually mess if your IT band which is exactly where my problems have been!  Check out the heels on my shoes…

check out the left heel!

GEEZ!  I am really wearing the left side of my left foot.  Not surprisingly, I am very even on my right foot which has given me no problems.  I’ve had these Adrenaline for a good amount of miles so its about “new shoe time” anyway so I tried out some new shoes.  I tried on and ran in a ton of stuff while M watched my gait.  And I ended up with these =) Love them!

Puppy in the background =) and note I've already changed the laces

These are the Brooks Glycerin 7.  I really love them and they felt great on the treadmill.  And the employee discount wasn’t bad either =) I got my shoes, an IT band Strap, and two pairs of Smartwool socks for cheaper than the shoes would have been alone.  Sweeeeeeet.  So I’m excited to take them for a spin.  I’ll keep you updated.  Might end up with an insole in the right shoe for a bit for stability if needed.

And on another note, my floral running skirt came today!  It’s even better in person than it looked on the site =)  It will be perfect for the Cherry Blossom!

And inspired by Shelly, here’s my before and after for this weeks run.

The Before…

rocking the pink shorts, bondi (and face) for Mel's Race for the Cure

The After…

See I don't always look like a running mess =)

So hope you all had a great weekend!  If you haven’t yet, check out my Virtual “Finish Chelsea’s Run” HERE!

Let’s Finish Chelsea’s Run!

Okay, I finally got everything organized for our Virtual Version of “Finish Chelsea’s Run”.  As I posted before, a bunch of locals gathered on March 21st at Lake Hodges, the park where Chelsea was kidnapped and killed while running, to finish Chelsea’s run.  They did this in order to honor Chelsea as well as to take back the park and show they could not be stopped from enjoying the beauty that Chelsea did.  Check out this video of the event…

I learned about this race through Running Skirt’s facebook page (the running skirts crew joined in the fun) and the more I read about the run, the more touched I was.  I found myself tearing up and thinking about not only Chelsea, but all those who for one reason or another, are no longer with us to run and enjoy the beauty that is our world.  I really wish I could have participated in this run and I knew many of you would have loved to as well.  So I thought why not honor Chelsea and all our “running angels” with a Virtual version of Finishing Chelsea’s Run!

So here’s how its going to work.  Since I am going to San Diego in June for the marathon, I am going to take a trip to Lake Hodges (hopefully with some of my TNT friends) with my boyfriend and run the trail where Chelsea was taken.  I will tie an Orange or Blue (Chelsea’s favorite colors) ribbons with each of the virtual runners’ (aka you!) first names along the path to show our support for taking back the park.

Lake Hodges

What do you get to do?  Email me at KatyeRunninAround@gmail.com with the following information…

  • Your name (and blog if you have one)
  • When you will be running/walking
  • What distance you are choosing to run/walk (the original Chelsea’s Run was 3 miles, but the distance is up to you!)
  • The name you would like to appear on the ribbons I will be tying on at the park and as you would like it to appear on your race bib
  • Your mailing address

The “race fee” for this race is a recommended $15 donation to the Ulman Fund for Young Adults HERE (you are welcome to donate more if you so chose).  Ulman Fund helps young adults face life after loss and helps survivors get back to being active and happy.  It’s a great cause and I figured why not benefit two great foundations with this race.  MY PARENTS AND I WILL MATCH THE FIRST $200 IN DONATIONS  TO CHELSEA’S LIGHT FOUNDATION.  This way two great organizations helping protect and empower young active people are benefitted =)

What do you get for your entry?

  • Recognition on the Virtual “Finish Chelsea’s Run” Page I will be creating on this blog
  • A personalized race bib for the event to show others you are finishing Chelsea’s run!
  • Automatic entry into my next 5 giveaways and contests!

What do you do?

  • Register for the race
  • Chose your distance, place, and time
  • Go for it! Run or walk your distance reflecting on the angel running with you
  • Wear orange or blue if possible! (Chelsea’s favorite colors): take a picture and mail it to me!

I promise to have the Virtual “Finish Chelsea’s Run” info posted later today.  PROMISE!

Surprise!

Hey all! Today’s post might also be a bit random but I guess that’s how my mind has been working lately =) This morning I had a committee meeting for our “Be Beautiful, Be You” 1st Annual Walk-a-Thon for Eating Disorder and Body Image Awareness.  It looks like this is actually going to work!  I’ve never been behind the scenes for putting a race or walk together and wow, there is so much involved!  Especially when you’re working with a non-profit who doesn’t have a ton of money to spare (hey the point is to raise money, not spend it).  But things are really coming together and I think its going to be great!  Because this is the first year for this event, there will be kinks to work out here and there but I think it will get easier and grow in the next few years.  As of now, we are expecting about 150 walkers!  Which is really awesome!  If you live in the Towson/Baltimore are and are interested in joining us please email me at KatyeRunninAround @ gmail.com!

"Real bodies aren't perfect, Perfect bodies aren't real"

So at the meeting we were deciding who would do what and how the morning would proceed.  Everyone was all up for volunteering and taking initiative and it was great!  Then we got to the point where Sharon, the founder of Eating Disorder Network of Maryland (EDN), the non profit org., asked if anyone would mind sharing their story before the walk begins as an inspiration/motivation and to show what exactly all the walkers are walking and fundraising for.  That’s when the room got silent and we all kind of sat there looking at each other.  Because mental illness does have a stigma in our society, it is hard to get out there in front of a few hundred people and admit you are/were sick.  It became obvious that no one was going to volunteer so I said “oh what the heck, if talking about myself can help someone else I’ll go for it”.  As soon as the words left my mouth I thought “good job Katye.  Just shot yourself in the foot”.  I’m definitely a people person but public speaking isn’t really my thing, especially about a part of my life that I have been so ashamed of.  My Sharon encouraged me saying she thinks it would be great for me to share how exercise has gone from being my addiction, obsession, and pretty much my life to something healthy, relaxing, fun, and enjoyable for me.  I used to give up everything to exercise…friends, hanging out, relaxing.  I had to workout and I had to workout alot.  Everyday.  It didn’t matter if it was midnight, if the urge hit I gave into it.  Exercise was punishment.  It was sooo much easier to be physically exhausted than it was to deal with mental exhaustion.

But not anymore.  Now exercise, particularly running, is all mine.  I have control over it.  I get to pick what I do and when I do it.  I get to relax when I need to.  If something really hurts, I get to decide how much my body can or can’ handle.  Running is something I push myself for, but don’t go over board with.  It shows me how awesome the human body really is and I truly love it.  So now I need to someone find a way to portray this for 150+ people.  Wow.  Yeah I’m pretty nervous.  I’ll keep yall updated with the progression of my “story” I’m putting together.  Please let me know if there is anything you think should definitely be included!  This walk isn’t just about eating disorders.  It’s about teaching people that hating your body is not normal or necessary!  It scares me that it just seems normal for most people to hate their bodies.  But it doesn’t have to be this way.  Its about finding what beautiful about you and loving everything that’s not perfect =)

On another note, my dad called me this morning and told me there was a “surprise” for me in the kitchen at home.  So after the meeting I stopped by my house and found that my Uncle and painted this for me!

Love it

next to the one he painted of my brother a few years ago

Sorry for the sucky quality, I didn’t have my camera with me so had to use my phone.  But you get the idea.  So cool, I really love it!  Thanks Uncle Pat!

And on another really cool note, some of my TNT friends have been starting blogs!  I already told you about Stephanie’s but go check out Grace and Courtney, say hey, wish them some new bloggy love/advice, and tell them I sent ya =)

Check back tonight (hopefully) for details on my Virtual “Finish Chelsea’s Run“.  I hope it will be successful and a fun way to honor those who cannot run anymore themselves.

Winner and I did it =)

So winner #2 of the Raffle (winning an Ipod Shuffle) is…

Yay!  Stephanie!  She actually entered before she had a blog but now that she does go check her out HERE.  Her birthday was the day of the Princess Half so I guess its a little bit of a late bday present! Congrats Steph!  E-mail me your mailing address and I’ll get that right out to you =)

And in other big news…I did it.  I took the plunge that has taken me a good 4 years to talk myself into.  You see me and needles aren’t friends.  Its not the pain aspect, its the thought of metal going into my skin.  Blood tests…yeah I pass out every time.  I start off fine…then I start to think of my blood going into that bag.  Yeah I’m getting queazy just thinking about it.  So the thought of spending 20 or so minute while some one continuously stuck me with a needle over and over was not one I was particularly excited for.  But once I finished my first big race and had my 21st birthday, my mom told me she’d go with me and pay for it as a late present once I decided if I could do it or not.  So tonight I did it =) And guess what.  It was not bad at all!  No passing out.  Not even a bit of light headedness.  It was quite a long process (not the actual tattoo, the whole paper work, setting up, drawing it out, discussing it, etc.) took a while and I’ll recount that tomorrow but for now here it is (before it gets all scabby and stuff).

The wing is reminiscent of the “hermes shoe” running logo which I liked and angel wings just really signify alot in my life and remind me of my running angels.  I went with the light blue because it is the color of ED awareness and recovery (I wanted some color but not much so it worked out well).  And the verse is Hebrews 12:1 “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (it’s also at the top of my blog).  That verse means SO many things to me.  So I’m very pleased.  I really loved and and I’m still amazed how unpainful it actually was.  I mean I definitely felt it but it was more uncomfortable than anything.  More on that tomorrow cuz I’m tired =)

Complete Randomness

Hey all!  Sorry of my lack of post yesterday…very out of character for me I know.  But it was a pretty busy day.  So maybe you’ll get super lucky and get two posts from me today?  Don’t push it but just maybe =)

To all you Tri Girls out there…go sell your bikes, or just shove them in your garage/basement/attic.  Because I have found a fabulous replacement!  Check out this fabulous little gem…

It’s from the Liberty of London collection at Target.  Ok, so yeah its not exactly an efficient racer but at least you’d look cute!!!  But if you’re not ready to get rid of your legit bikes, maybe check out these girls sized versions for your mini tri girls.  Seriously how cute are these bikes??? (BTW I don’t actually have this bike, but hey if I move to the beach…it’s all mine)

Speaking of super cute floral prints, Running Skirts’ Summer Line is now available online HERE !  I bought my floral skirt…so excited!  But I’ve never run long distance in a running skirt (well without shorts underneath) and was wondering if you running skirts experts could answer one gearing question.  How do you not chafe?  I mean my thighs touch.  They always have and they always will.  Even when I was at a really low weight my thighs touch, and I’ve actually realized the more I run and more my legs and the more toned they get, they still touch.  It’s just a fact of life.  So does the BodyGlide alone protect you guys?  I’d love to hear your experience =)

love it!

On a completely different note…I’m doing something big this afternoon.  As in something pretty permanent.  And something involving needles, which I don’t do.  And something that might make me pass out and/or cry like a baby.  AHHHHHH definitely more of that later if I’m alive…

And hopefully I will be getting in two runs this weekend!  Not two super long ones, hopefully one sucessful long one and a fun one =) *Cough* Erin *Cough*

PS: The Second drawing in my Big Raffle is TODAY.  Today’s winner will receive and IPOD SHUFFLE!  the final winner will be chosen 4/1 and will receive and Ipod Shuffle and the rest of the running gear =) So check back!  Still time to enter!

I’ll leave you with this…just because I think its hilarious

Hott or Nott Humpday

Hey wonderful BlogHers and Hims.  Sorry this is getting out a bit late tonight but I’ve been fairly busy today trying to catch up on life since being sick.  I’m about 80% back to normal =) Sticking to pretty bland boring foods and dropping my workout intensity a good amount seems to be working.  The only thing is now all my muscles are just plain achy.  Ouch.  Oh well, as long as I’m good for this weekend long run.

Hott

  • “Finish Chelsea’s Run” that took place this past Saturday at the park where Chelsea King was kidnapped and murdered.  A bunch of locals in San Diego got together to “take back the park” and finish the run Chelsea will never get to finish.  How freaking awesome.  Read more about it HERE. The lovely running skirts twins were among the crowd and I’ve been asking them some questions about the event.  I’m going to be putting together a virtual run to “Finish Chelsea’s Run” so keep a look out.  While I’m in San Diego for the Marathon in June, I’m hoping to get some teammates together and head to the same park and run the loop in honor of Chelsea but I want to put together a way for us all to join together and take back running!  How many of you would be interested?

  • Showing up the guys at BodyPump today wearing a shirt that actually read “Sorry ladies, guns just weren’t meant for women”.  Are you serious.  He was a fairly bigger guy, but definitely had a beer gut…read ex in shape high school jock turned frat guy with one too many pizzas and beers but still thinks he has the body he had when he was 17.  I’ll have you know I squatted 1/3 more than he did =) And he was struggling.  Maybe I should wear my “I guess quads just weren’t made for guys” shirt next week.  PS: He never lifted more than me on a singe track.
  • The weather here in Baltimore!  Well its not exactly hot but high 60′s and sunny makes me happy =)
  • Running Skirts’ new summer skirts!  I’m told you can order them over the phone now, and they will be available on the website soon!  I have my eye on the floral one for the Cherry Blossom 10 miler (with Tonia’s approval of course).
  • Hopefully getting to meet up with Erin for a run this weekend!  Anymore Baltimoreans interested, let me know!
  • My Raffle (featuring TWO MORE Ipods!) for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: next drawing: 3/26.  Final Drawing: 4/1

  • All these cases of kids beating the heck out of each other.  Today I saw a story on the news about a 14 year old boy beating a female class mate so bad at school that she is now in an induced coma at the hospital in Florida, all over something she had text messaged him.  The boy texted her back saying “I’m coming over there to snap you neck” put on steel toe boots, and biked three miles to the school and attack her.  Read more HERE.  Wow.  This just breaks my heart.  Where are kids learning things like this?  Yes, middle schoolers are petty and superficial, but beating each other to the brink of death?  Wow.
  • "Josie Lou Ratley, 15, has undergone two surgeries to relieve pressure on her brain from the savage beating that took place last Wednesday outside Deerfield Beach Middle School."

  • People posting the video of whale attack that took trainer Dawn Brancheau’s life and Seaworld about a month ago.  I can understand why Seaworld and authorities may need to see this but posting it to the public is just disrespectful to both Dawn and her family.  I can’t imagine what is must be like for her family to stumble upon this or have some sicko send it to them.
  • The current “leadership in Baltimore”.  Cut teacher’s pensions?  Sure.  Lay off Police Officers in an area where crime in EVERYWHERE and already doesn’t have enough patrol? Why not.  Close 7 fire houses?  Go for it.  Cut the unqualified mayors paycheck?  OH NO!  Now we have a problem!  Seriously.  Our last mayor resigned after a court case over gift cards she stole from charity.  Yep she stole from charity.  And her punishment?  Resign and keep her $100,000 pension.  Harsh.  Replace her with some big mouth who knows nothing about politics but has the right daddy.  Wow.  Priorities reallllly need to be rethought.
  • Wearing shirts reading “Sorry ladies, guns just weren’t meant for women” to the gym.  Or ever.  Especially if you get shown up by a girl while wearing it ; )
  • I love me some Dwight Schrute

So that’s the end of my ran.  Sorry for making things a bit heavy this time around but these are things that were really bugging me.  What about you?  What’s on your Hott and Nott lists this week?
