Okay so you probably know I ventured down to VA last night to stay with T from Racing With Babes and her lovely family. Let me just tell you 1) I’m having an amazing time…constant entertainment and 2) her blog posts are not exaggerating a single bit. Every thing she says about her little ones is 100% true. It’s wonderful.
I arrived after bedtime last night so I didn’t get to meet the girls right away; however Dizzle did manage to wander her way down the steps and say a quick hi. Not shy at all. So we hung out a bit and watched some TV with T’s husband J and went to bed pretty early to make our 5:30 am meet up time with G and another one of T and G’s local running buddies. Before bed we did manage to check the weather forecast. At 5am the next morning it was supposed to be 76 degrees with 89% humidity and a heat index of 85. And this was for 5am. Sweet. So we were up and ready by 5:30 this morning as ventured out into the dampness of the outside.
Lets just say I wasn’t feeling great to begin with when I woke up this morning. But I thought I could tough it out with enough water. We had all planned on completing G’s virtual Half and Half race but honestly I wasn’t completely commited in my head. The furthest I’ve run since the marathon was the Baltimore 10 miler which was a little over a month ago and since than the furthest I’ve gone was 8 miles. I was scared jumping from 8 to 13 would ignite the lovely IT but I figured I’d give it a try. So as I said at 5:30 we were read to roll. Not without a quick picture first of course.
So we started out and seriously…it was like running through water. It wasn’t even the heat that was bad it was the humidity. It was brutal. For the most part I was feeling pretty good but not great by any means. My stomach hurt, my head hurt, I was having trouble regulating my breathing. You know the works. My small case of sports induced asthma really only acts up in super humid conditions and I could feel it coming. The worst part is before we left for the run nurse G said “do you have your inhaler”. My response, “nah I’ll be fine”. Lies.
Around mile 3 I had to mentally except that 13 was not in the plan. At all. It wasn’t so much my legs or anything feelings tired, I just couldn’t get my body to cooperate. Nothing felt right and I was just really having trouble getting my breathing steady. I was overly winded when I really shouldn’t have been. So as we looped back past T’s house, as much as it killed me and made me feel like the runner’s version of a high school drop out, I knew if I kept going that 1) I would hold everyone back and 2) would feel like crap for the rest of the run and probably the rest of the day. Plus, lets just say my body had some more surprises in store for me making the stomach and head thing make perfect sense. So I sent the rest of the ladies on their way, composed myself a bit, grabbed some water, and did a few more loops around the neighborhood to get at least 4 miles in. I ended up with 4.5. So my Half and Half Half Marathon turned more into the 5K. Oh well. We have 8 miles planned for Sunday so hopefully that will go much better.
Anyway, as T and the ladies were still out and about, I made my best attempted at de-sweatifying myself, showered, and hung out with T’s middle child Doodle. Seriously, this kid is so unintentionally hilarious. We played around on photo booth for a few…

Eventually the ladies returned in their soaking wet glory and we all basically agreed that the planned day trip to Bush Gardens would be much better traded for a day at the pool. The heat index for the day was supposed to be between 100 and 105 for the majority of the day. Ouch. So we grabbed our swim suits and met up with G and her clan at the pool.

yeah, I'm pale. Get over it.
It was a great time and when Dilly’s nap time approached I helped T wrangle up her girls and we headed home. And you would think a day in the heat and swimming would wear her girls out…you are wrong. Their energy supply is endless. And seriously she’s right. They love to talk. And some of the things that come out of their mouths are so freaking funny. BTW, Dizzle felt it was necessary to let me know she was going to the bathroom so I shouldn’t worry about her while she was gone. She then proceeded to scream out the bathroom door, “Katye, I’m out of toilet paper. Just letting you know!” Thanks Dizzle. We played around a little bit more with photo booth. As much as these girls love to hear their own voices, they also love to see themselves on the computer screen.

So we got ourselves together and headed to the mall where California Pizza Kitchen is to meet J for dinner. The entrance was through a Dicks Sporting Goods which happens to be having HUGE clearances right now. AKA T grabbed some $2 super cute Nike socks, and I scored some serious laces. One pair that matches my new Mizunos perfectly. And T and I scored some totally awesome matching Nike shirts. I had been telling her earlier today on the run about this shirt I wanted from Dick’s but couldn’t find and low and behold them had it. It a bright yellow shirt that says “Train to Live, Live to Train” in bright pink. Loves it.
So anyway we got home, I got to witness a small Doodle tantrum and now they are in bed and we are sitting here chilling…contemplating Cold Stone.
And there you have it. A day in the life of Racing with Babes. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the weekend has in store.
